Hi. Nice article! The trouble with Yahtzee, and sometimes with real life scenarios, is that the “if better” opportunities we need to aim for do actually head in other directions. For example, if you roll 33336 but you’re aiming for a full house, you need to choose whether to hold the fourth 3 or not, as doing so (in theory) would remove the chance to get a Full House if you fail to win the bigger prize. It’s a fork in the road, and a direction must be chosen. That is a difficult choice.
I appreciate that in Yahtzee the odds of getting a fifth 3 on the final roll are actually the same as rolling any other number so in practise you would always hold the four 3s as it’s the best chance of getting either a Yahtzee, three of a kind OR Full House, so it’s still the correct move, but that isn’t the point :)
Incidentally, I never hold Full House early on on the first or second roll, because the odds of getting a fourth number on any slot, or a Yahtzee, or getting the Full House back are quite high, and this perfectly matches your philosophy of “…or better.”
